ALKANTARA FESTIVAL | CORBEAUX (CROWS), by Bouchra Ouizguen

Corbeaux is inspired by the Moroccan trance dance ritual as well as by the uncensored figure of the “madman”, a common reference in Persian literature of the 9th to 12th centuries. Madness…but what madness? The madness of the genius and of wisdom? Madness which is in the blood? Alienated or free? Passionate or desperate? Corbeaux is interpreted by a group of approximately 20 women, of all ages, through a coming together of Moroccan artists and a group of Lisbon women who will be selected during an audition and will attend workshops before the performances. The local performers mix themselves in with the members of the Moroccan company forming a unique “murder of crows”. Since its creation in 2014 for the Marrakech Biennale of Contemporary Art, Corbeaux has been presented in some of the world’s most iconic centres of art (such as the Tate Modern in London and the Louvre Museum in Paris), but also in public squares in some of the least privileged neighbourhoods of major cities. This performance seeks a dialogue with a range of diverse spaces and their cultural, historical and aesthetic qualities, blending local inhabitants with the spectators who come specifically to watch the performance
