Or if there were, they would have been far fewer than there are today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> When the castle was a fortress waiting to be conquered, there was no point in helping the enemy by providing him with something that he could climb or even burn and consequently facilitate his attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The castle garden appeared in the 1950s and is one of the first examples of landscape architecture in Portugal. The idea came to its creator, the architect Gon\u00e7alo Ribeiro Teles, when the castle definitively gave up its military role.
