King Afonso III
Afonso III, the fifth king of Portugal (1248-1279) Succeeding his brother Sancho II and reigning between 1248 and1279.
Educated at the French court, he brought back important influences that would be reflected in Portuguese military architecture. We know he was behind important works which improved the Lisbon’s defensive system, particularly at the castle and royal palace.
After taking Faro and cities in the Algarve from the Muslims, he dedicated himself to the administration of the kingdom.
He was the first Portuguese monarch to spend long periods in Lisbon, living at the castle palace from at least 1264.
