Court Dances at the Castle – 17th Century
Castelo de São Jorge invites visitors to step into the vibrant court celebrations of the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, where dance evolved into a grand spectacle!
Through a series of historical reenactments showcasing dance, music, and spoken word from these three distinct eras, the Danças com História Association will present the various artistic expressions within the social, political, and cultural contexts of each period.
June 8 – 11AM – The 17th Century with Francisco Manuel de Melos
In the grand palace festivities of bygone times, the noble art of dance thrived as an exclusive privilege of the aristocracy. D. Francisco Manuel de Melo, faithful to this tradition, introduced Opera Ballet to the kingdom and, in his famous “Auto do Fidalgo Aprendiz”, portrayed the efforts of a nobleman striving to master this art. Although, by the late 17th century, the Portuguese nobility had turned its attention to bullfighting, Moorish dances and folias remained a customary prelude to the bullfights.
