Military Arts at the Castle – Besteiros do Conto

The Besteiros do Conto are one of the most prominent military institutions of medieval Portugal. Created in the late 13th century by King Dinis and consolidated in the following centuries by King Afonso IV and King Pedro, this organization required municipalities to provide a fixed number of crossbowmen, specialists in handling the fearsome crossbow.
he activity includes live demonstrations of the use of bows and crossbows, weapons of great impact on medieval battlefields, and explores the tactics and responsibilities of these highly trained warriors.
At the end, participants will have the unique opportunity to try handling the weapons under the expert guidance of members of the Military Guild.
