Cult and Narratives of St. George
In the narratives about St. George there is an episode in which the warrior saint rides away on horseback while dealing a mortal blow to a dragon. An epilogue of a violent combat, derived from the epic literature of ancient times, and of which several artistic interpretations have remained.
In Portugal, the martyr became one of the central figures in the religious circle, becoming the patron of the kingdom and its military forces. Lisbon’s devotion to the saint was evident in the spaces dedicated to him, including the Castle; or in the honours paid to his figure in the city’s most important procession: the Corpus Christi procession.
However, there is much more to discover. This tour, which passes through the old citadel of Lisbon, aims to revisit places, question images, reinterpret words and discover new and different facets of the figure of Saint George.
