Lisbon before and after the Earthquake.
Throughout its history, Lisbon has experienced the effects of several earthquakes.” The most violent one, on All Saints’ Day in 1755, destroyed a significant part of the city and resulted in several thousand deaths, caused by the earthquake, the tsunami, or the subsequent fires.
Castelo de São Jorge was not immune to this catastrophe that would forever change the landscape of Lisbon.
During this visit, we will get to know some of the transformations caused by the great earthquake in the city and the monument, as well as the reconstruction efforts led by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the future Marquess of Pombal.
