The Castle Uprising (1928)
Castelo de São Jorge presents the temporary exhibition “The Castle Uprising (1928)” starting December 6 in the Ogival Room. Part of the official celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of April 25, the exhibition will be open until May 31, 2025. On July 20, 1928, soldiers from the 7th Hunters Battalion, stationed at Castelo de São Jorge, led a military and civilian uprising against the Military Dictatorship. Known as the Castle Uprising (or Castle Revolution), this movement was one of the most significant actions undertaken by active resistance forces against the dictatorial regime. Ultimately, the revolt was quashed by government-loyal forces after an intense military intervention at the castle hilltop, which had severe consequences for its leaders. Although the uprising was suppressed, it is recognized today for its importance as a powerful demonstration of public discontent and as evidence of the Republican forces’ capacity to mobilize support for resistance efforts.
