In the Substance of Time

To mark the 50th anniversary of April 25th, Castelo de São Jorge will be the stage for the show “In the Substance of Time,” presented by the Portuguese Company of Contemporary Dance (CPBC), on May 18th and 19th, at 10 p.m., with free entry starting from 9:30 p.m.

As part of the programme for the European Night of Museums, “In the Substance of Time” is a three-act performance, alluding to loss, love, and ideas of freedom and hope. The first piece, “Around Suspension,” choreographed by Vasco Wellenkamp and Miguel Ramalho, pays homage to the poetry of Sophia de Mello Breyner. “Autumn for Graça,” by Vasco Wellenkamp, is a duet initially conceived for the dancer Graça Barroso, co-founder of CPBC. “Requiem,” also authored by Wellenkamp, is inspired by Benjamin Britten’s musical work.

Founded in 1998 by Vasco Wellenkamp and Graça Barroso, the Portuguese Company of Contemporary Dance (CPBC) emerged with the purpose of being a repertory company, promoting a diversified contemporary aesthetic and providing a space for choreographers, dancers, and artists from various fields to explore and enhance their artistic languages together. Since 2020, in addition to its work of creating and maintaining repertoire, CPBC has initiated the Dance Warehouse project, a space dedicated to hosting structures and artists without their own venues for creation and presentation. In November 2021, Cláudia Sampaio assumed the artistic direction of CPBC, committing to preserving the aesthetic established by Wellenkamp and strengthening the artistic diversity of the company.
